I agree with what you are saying. Some really toned prints need something to make them look appealing again. I would put an asterisk besides these prints if they have been treated. I would be very careful about using chemicals, since the long term implications are probably not known. Hundreds of years from now the paper might look quite different because of the chemical additions. Someone mentioned that they saw foxing around a spot that had been chemically altered. I can imagine that after a while a chemical used to whiten a print can possibly become a media which would enhance bacterial growth. I would only use it when necessary and then only on the area that absolutely needs treatment. I think paper will last quite a long time though, there are paper items dating from Kamakura period (>800years ago) that are still in wonderful shape. I imagine they will be around a thousand years from now.
