I know nothing about Ukiyo-e, but IMO one cannot consider such a subject without having a firm grasp on the roles of the sexes in Japanese society and the religious & philosophical, to say nothing of the social & practical, reasons for those roles. Gender and social relations in Japan are a practical and at times quite delicate balance and one that a great deal of thought and deliberate cultivation went into creating. Contradictions abound: Japanese men, however they treat women, believe to a man that Japanese women are the best in the world...it's a tangled web! Good luck freeing your mind of preconceptions and if you want to find used books of any kind try www.addall.com/used This is the best resource on the net IMO.
