Susan,

Utamaro pictures some scenes of women performing domestic chores and many with children. However, he often pictured women doing jobs that were normally done by men such as silk making or print making.

A few of these ukiyo-e as well as a chapter titled "The Yama-uba and Kintoki Series and the "Mother and Child" prints can be found in the book "Utamaro" by Jack Hillier.

Also, Kunichika produced a series called "Fifty-four modern feelings" (matched with the chapter of Genji) in 1884 (the Meiji period). Several of these prints show domestic scenes. Unfortunately, the domestic scenes are not published but you can see a few of them at www.japaneseprints.net. After you get to the web page, click on the box saying "Print Gallery" at the top. When you get the list of artists, click on "Kunichika". Then click on any of the small pictures to enlarge them.
