You originally asked about the Edo era, so I hesitated to suggest this book, which deals with shin-hanga. However, you might be interested in "Light in Darkness: Women in Japanese Prints of Early Showa (1926-1945)", 1996, Fisher Gallery, University of Southern California.
This is an exhibition catalog and collection of essays. It is readily available through paragonbook.com.
