If you read Japanese - or can get your Japanese friend to translate for you - you'll fínd a wealth of information at the Tokyo University Digital Museum website.
There is also a CD-ROM from Bunsei Shoin Booksellers available.
The only reference work in English that I can think of is Julia Meech-Pekarik's The World of the Meiji Print (Weatherhill 1986), for instance p 216.
