And thank-you for the comments. To be fair to Ohya Shobo, it is a good place to see some ehon if you only have a few days in Tokyo and don't speak fluent Japanese. Unless you can reveal some secrets? Moreover, the prices can be curiously inconsistent...
As for the kyoka ehon, I was struck by how well the colours matched what I would expect in a faded original. However, I guessed that early to mid 19th century impressions greatly outnumber early impressions. Nevertheless, I think the high bidder (not me!) was probably very pleased with his or her purchase. :o)
Living in northern Scotland I envy many US collectors, who obviously have much better opportunities near their doorsteps. An ehon at a local sale might be a good buy, but how many years would I have to wait for one to appear? It would probably be by Bairei anyway.
