: The artist is Ishikawa Toyomasa, who produced prints during the 1770's. He was a pupil of Toyonobu, much influenced by Harunobu. Your image is the eighth in the series Furyu junigetsu, 'A modern/fashionable twelve months' and the five boys in the foreground are playing Imomushi 'caterpillar' for the festival Tsukimi 'Moon-watching' held on the fifteenth day of the eighth month. Almost all copies of the set that I have encountered (including those in the Art Institute of Chicago [which has an almost complete set]) are later versions from recut blocks.
thank you very much,i would never know these are boys, not guys and they are playing caterpillar??
the ones you saw,how old are the restrikes??
