: Yes, I think Hans Olof is correct. I read the first character as 'shô' but its alternate reading, 'ko', should be used in this particular signature . It seems that in Chaikin's book (The Sino-Japanese War), he also read it as 'shô' and then concluded that the primary name was Kunimasa, leading to the mistaken attribution. The Merritt and Yamada citation is the one to use.
