As far as I can tell, you are absolutely right. The series is Genji kumo ukiyo-e awase (Ukiyo-e parallels for the chapters of Genji), published about 1845. This print refers to chapter 7 of Murasaki Shibiku's famous novel: Momiji no ga (An Autumn Excursion in Seidensticker's translation). The "ukiyo-e parallel", with the samurai holding a human head below the autumn moon, could be a scene from a kabuki play, or perhaps based on a historical event.
